About
Hi, I am Holly Gramlich (Cassell), or Ms. Holly to my students. My teaching style emphasizes an understanding of technique that will help a student reach their highest capabilities, tempered with a love for music. I work with students on the "inner game" of music to help them feel comfortable and confident when performing.
From 2017-2021 I taught violin at the Evola School of Music in Canton, MI. At Evola, I coached students to a first place ensemble award at the Michigan Association of Christian Schools (MACS) Regional Competition. I regularly send students to the American Guild of Music contests, where they have placed in several different categories. During my time at Evola Music, I regularly taught group violin classes and grew my studio to over thirty students of all ages.
I have an BA in Music from Grand Valley State University (2014) where I studied violin with Gregory Maytan, DMA and an MA in Historical Musicology from the University of North Texas. My thesis, "Looking Through a Different Lens, Beyond Censorship: The American Reception of 'Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District'" was published in 2017 under the guidance of Mark McKninght, PhD. At UNT, I published articles on American music and was a co-editor for the 2017 critical edition of Monteverdi's Il Corinazione di Poppea for Barenreiter's Urtext label.
A classically trained violinist, I am proficient in solo and orchestral literature. I play weddings and special events as a soloist and chamber musician in the Metro-Detroit area. I also play the Chinese spike fiddle, erhu. I have performed erhu with the Hua Yun Chinese Orchestra (Dallas) and was a member of the UNT Chinese Ensemble.
